Raising Standards, Reducing Impact

Sustainability in Action.

Our line of work has always required us to pursue the best industry practices to remain competitive. Looking ahead now demands us to take an increasing responsibility for our impact on the environment around us.

At Attard Bros Group, sustainability is part of how we work every day. We’re continuously investing in greener practices, from adopting ISO 14001:2015 to reducing our carbon footprint throughout our manufacturing lines and developing more eco-friendly products. Through research, innovation, and strong international partnerships, we're helping lead the shift toward sustainable construction.

Our company-wide Environmental Policy ensures every team member plays a role, turning commitment into action and building a more responsible future, one project at a time.

ISO Standard

ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems

As part of our commitment to sustainability, in 2025 Attard Bros Group became ISO 14001:2015 certified for the construction of buildings and sales of construction materials. This international standard in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) reflects our proactive approach to managing environmental impacts across all our projects.

Following the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, ISO 14001:2015 requires us to continuously assess and improve our processes by identifying potential environmental risks, setting measurable sustainability goals, and ensuring full compliance with legal requirements.

Our management team integrates these principles into everyday operations, while regular training, audits, and performance reviews help us stay on track. Through this structured approach, we not only protect the environment, but also drive efficiency and long-term value for our clients and stakeholders.

The tangible results of this rigorous system can be observed across many key areas of our operations, namely: Carbon Reduction, Renewable Energy, Water Usage, Sourcing of Materials and Energy Efficiency.

Carbon Reduction

Sustainable Construction Starts Here

The construction industry is responsible for nearly 39% of global carbon emissions, with around 30% coming from the production of materials like cement and steel. The remaining 70% is tied to building operations, often due to poor insulation and energy inefficiency.

At the heart of the issue are the materials we use and how buildings perform over time. By focusing on sustainable choices early in the design process, we can dramatically reduce a building’s lifetime emissions and protect the long-term value of every project.

Renewable Energy

A Stronger Future Through Solar

With Malta’s 300+ sunny days a year and high solar radiation levels, solar energy is a smart, sustainable choice for our industry. Over a decade ago, we began installing solar panels, and today we generate over 1MW of clean, on-site power.

This “zero-kilometre” energy model cuts transmission losses, lowers our carbon footprint, and boosts efficiency. It also shields us from energy price fluctuations and supply disruptions, making our operations more secure and future-ready.

By investing in renewables, we’re reducing emissions, increasing independence, and aligning with global efforts toward a greener, more resilient construction industry.

Water Waste & Usage

Engineered Efficiency, One Drop at a time

On an island like Malta, where freshwater is limited, conserving water isn’t optional — it’s essential. Through efficient systems, closed-loop recycling, and in-house filtration, we’ve significantly reduced our reliance on external water sources.

Our production is aimed at recycling all our water, while mains supply is reserved for offices. Continuous monitoring, strict quality control, and proactive maintenance ensure efficiency and sustainability.

Even as our operations grow, our water usage remains steady — proof that smart resource management works. From daily practices to long-term investments, we’re committed to protecting one of Malta’s most valuable and vulnerable resources."

Active Measures we take to reduce our Water Waste

Water Recycling & Technology
  • Use of closed-loop water systems for production facilities.
  • Internal water filtration and interconnected tank systems support water reuse across operations.
  • Reverse osmosis systems ensure clean, reliable water for production processes.
  • Water from the national supply is used only in offices, not in industrial processes.
Monitoring & Quality Control
  • Continuous monitoring of water usage and recycling systems.
  • Tracking water use relative to production and projecting future needs.
  • In-house chemical lab and third-party testing ensure water meets production quality standards.
Maintenance & Infrastructure
  • Proactive maintenance by in-house technicians prevents leaks and inefficiencies.
  • Routine inspections and preventive maintenance on pipes and equipment.
Employee Engagement
  • Daily education and reinforcement of water-saving practices.
  • Encouragement of employee participation in water conservation efforts.
Sustained Efficiency
  • Despite increased production and product range, overall water consumption remains stable, reflecting improved efficiency.
Sourcing of Materials

Building Responsibly, Layer by Layer

The shift away from quarrying in the 1990s marked a major step toward more sustainable building practices. By focusing on industrially produced, quality-controlled materials, we reduce the use of natural resources while maintaining structural strength.

Today, our product lines include eco-conscious concrete, recycled aggregates, and structural lightweight solutions that minimize CO₂ emissions, material use, and environmental impact throughout the lifecycle. These products are not only energy-efficient to produce, but also easier to transport, install, and reuse.

Through innovation, we support greener construction and more resilient buildings, meeting today’s demands without compromising tomorrow’s environment.

Key Sustainability Measures

Material Innovation & Reduction
  • Ceased quarry operations to focus on sustainable industrial production.
  • Developed green concrete mix designs with CEM III cement, achieving 29% lower CO₂ emissions.
  • Use of recycled and reprocessed aggregates from rubble and production waste.
  • Controlled supply chains ensure certified, low-impact materials.
Lightweight Construction
  • Full product line of structural lightweight concrete, blocks, and precast elements.
  • Lightweight products offer: Up to 25% less weight, Improved transport efficiency, Lower energy use during production, Enhanced thermal and sound insulation.
Lifecycle Thinking
  • Focus on materials that are recyclable and remanufacturable.
  • Consideration of environmental impact at all stages: production, transport, storage, and use.
Responsible Urban Development
  • Support for renovation and retrofitting of existing buildings to reduce land use.
  • Solutions designed for limited load-bearing conditions and constrained urban spaces.
